Today on my way out of school I asked our school principal how she was. Mrs. Frig answered that she was okay and after asking me how I was she looked at me and said something I didn't expect.

"Casey, I'm proud of you." I was surprised.

"What for?"

"Because You are so open honest and happy with who you are. In all of the places I've taught I don't think I've met a person quite like you when it comes to that." She smiled at me then. "You know, it takes a lot of strength to be out and I'm glad you feel safe enough to do that."

I turned to her then. "Mrs. Frig." I said "I don't feel safe doing it. But i do hope that someone else will be able to come out, and feel safe doing so because of me. I didn't like who I was but when I was okay with it after a long time I decided I should be open about it. Maybe I can help someone so they don't have to go through what I did. "

"Well if you ever need an advocate I'm here. And thanks. "

"Thank you. And I'll so totally borrow that flag you talked about the other day."

What brought on this conversation? A rainbow flag being worn as a cape, a rainbow tie, or neckalace, or sleeve. She said she was proud of me because I am me. And you know what? If she's in the administration maybe I have a chance of making my school a better place.
